Not a chance in Hell McNabb should be in the Hall of Fame. We are seeing now that so much of his resume was the result of Andy Reid's offense, which can make average QBS such as Alex Smith or stiffs like Kevin Kolb successful.
When he went to Washington he was far from done at 34. If you can play QB you can certainly play at 34. Just ask Brees, Brady, Peyton . Favre etc. No when he went to Washington and then Minnesota the true Donovan McNabb was revealed.
I think McNabb gets close to the HOF, but doesn't get in.
He had a good 10 year run where he was near tops in most categories for all QB's during that 10 year time period.
But when compared to his peers:
1) Tom Brady was drafted one year later, and has accomplished so much more in an identical time frame, in addition to playing a longer career.
2)Brett Favre only retired one year prior to McNabb, despite starting his career 9 seasons before McNabb was drafted.
3) Peyton Manning was drafted one year before McNabb and is still going, with a ring and 2 additional SB appearances.
McNabb was top tier QB in his prime, but not quite HOF level guy. As for Romo, (asked in this thread) his career has 3-5 years left, so the jury is till out. As of right now, no he doesn't get in. If he wins a championship, or gets the Cowboys to a Superbowl, then yes, he is in.
Romo is a good QB, in my humble opinion a top 5 NFL QB, minus the losses during big games. If Romo had won the crucial games over his career, he'd be right up there with the best of the best. But he lost those games. And at the end of the day, winning is what the NFL is all about.
I think all of the relevant points have been made.
Never really put the team on his back
Was only top tier a couple of years
Played for an excellent QB coach
Stats only look average when compared to QB's from 20-30 years ago
I really liked Donovan McNabb and enjoyed him in the league. A previous poster compared him to Steve McNair, but I actually would vote McNair into the HoF. Unlike McNabb, McNair always put his team on his back and never played for an excellent QB coach. McNair played for coaches like Jeff Fisher, Brian Billick, and Jim Fassel. He put everything he had into games and took much abuse. I understand that Steve McNair won't get in because his stats aren't impressive enough, but I personally would give him my vote for what all he gave up.
No Hall of Fame for Donovan McNabb. He never won a Super Bowl, and he had a maddening tendency to come up small in big games. Also consider that Andy Reid made Jeff Garcia and Michael Vick look good. It's no coincidence that McNabb's career fell off a cliff the moment he left the Eagles.
