For 500 years the ball was held/dropped parallel to the ground and if hit right would spiral high and far. Now seeing increasing no. of punts where the ball is dropped nose down resulting in end-over-end. Not sure why.
Shorter kicks, in theory, mean the coverage has a chance to get down the field and reduce the number/quality of returns.
End-over-end gives you at least 50% odds that the bounce will go your way.
Not sure if any of that is the real reasons, but.. Sounds good to me.
I will say.. After that Baltimore game today.. I suspect we'll be seeing a rule change next year that a safety means that the free kick is an untimed play.

never been much on punting myself, though i admire them, i can tell you that this is probably as good an explanation as any.
i do however miss the old days when punters, like ray guy, had fine enough control over where they sent their punts, and could put the ball inside the five yard line, and have it go out of bounds thus making it unreturnable. ray guy could also kick the ball nearly 70 yards from scrimmage as well.

Punter Rohn Stark was the last former Baltimore Colts player to be active in the NFL.
