For or againt the push rule
---------
The NFL once banned the assisting of a ball carrier via pushing, pulling or carrying, but in 2005 the league lifted the ban for pushing. For some reason it really didn’t catch on — the pushing of the ball carrier by his own teammates — until this season (2023).
It happens often down near the goal to push over the goal line. During middle of the field tackles a group of defenders and offense push the pile long it's way until the runner is down or the refs blow the whistle.
I can see the argument against, as it's no longer really a running play in the conventional sense. The runner holds the ball, but often they have lost all forward momentum and are essentially just holding onto the ball, with the OL holding them and just pushing the ball carrier with ball across the goal line - that's not a running play.
On the other hand, it is a team sport, and it's always *some* combination of athleticism and brute force, so I don't have a strong leaning either way as to whether it should be legal.
Word on the street is the rule will be under review by the competition committee in the off-season.
