For Christmas last year, my mother-in-law opted to give all of her children and their spouses digital cameras as gifts. The model she gave us was a Kodak Easyshare P880 Digital Camera, available from Best Buy for around $655. Since Christmas, the price has dropped to $170. At the time of its release, it was the best digital camera on the market, and still holds that position at Best Buy. But for all of the expense, the camera certainly doesn't cut corners on features. It comes with connection cables, a rechargeable battery, software for the computer and a carrying case out of the box. The camera is very easy to use, and can be used more or less right out of the box without much need for instruction, although reading the owner's manual is always a good thing.
The camera captures images in fourteen megapixels and has a three level zoom. Photos can be reviewed on the color LCD screen on the back, which also acts as the viewfinder, although a regular eye viewfinder is also part of the camera. I have not found the need to use the face detection feature, although the camera does have one, as well as a setting that minimizes eye glare. The user can adjust the settings for outdoor, sunset and night time shooting, as well as shoot in color, black and white and sepia. The camera supports memory stick and memory stick duo, as well as SD cards and comes with a 2GB SD card. It can connect to the computer via USB2 and shows up as an external hard drive, making it a plug and play device.
Although I do not use the feature myself, there is an option for capturing short MP4 movies with the device, although it is limited to fifteen seconds and tends to consume memory space. It has been a fun little camera to own, easy to use, and does not give any trouble. One of the family members who received one had a problem with the card crashing and losing the images, though none of the rest of us have experienced this problem. It has been a wonderful gift and has come in handy on many occasions.
