We always had Canon cameras, which we mostly use for photos of birds and other wildlife when hiking, so when we decided that we wanted an update, we decided to go for the new Canon 15 megapixel EOS 50D.
This sophisticated digital camera provides fantastic speed for nature enthusiasts like us who often need to catch bird in flight or rabbit running. It has an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, which produces fantastic clear images. The new DIGIC 4 Image Processor provides very fine detail and extremely natural colors. Its ISO capabilities are up to 12800, which is good for poor light conditions, but we found that we do not use much higher ISO than 400.
The screen is nice 3.0-inch Active Matrix TFT Color Clear View LCD with superfine picture with 920,000 dots. The large size screen is very important when you get older, so that you can see what you are doing. The EOS 50D is capable of Live View and Face Detection Live modes, and a bunch of other automatic features.
We find the camera a bit heavy (1.6 pounds), but it is probably the price we have to pay for having almost pro camera. We also have to carry extra batteries since they go very fast.
The camera uses simple CompactFlash (CF) Card, which we upgraded right away to have enough space for a lot of photos. Canon provides its own software for processing photos, but it is possible to download them to other programs you are more used to.
We are not professional photographers and this is the most expensive camera we bought so far ($679.00 at Camera Kings), but I think it is absolutely worth it. The photos, even of moving birds, are perfectly clear, with no blurring. It is easy to operate and intuitive and we could not have asked for more. Problem with such high quality photos is that we now need a high quality printer, otherwise we can enjoy them only on our screens.
