Sony Alpha A700 Digital SLR Camera

Rating: 5 out of 5
  • Currently 5.0/5.0

The Alpha 700 is another camera in Sony's line of Digital SLRs. It is upper-mid range camera. It isn't at the upper range that a professional might prefer. But it is larger and more sophisticated then a causal photographer would choose. It was created for the serious amateur, or someone looking to get started in professional photography.

Sony ships the Alpha 700 alone, just the body (no lens). But most retailers will package this body with a lens and other accessories.

Out of the box, once the battery is charged and memory card installed, the user can start taking photos immediately. Unlike other digital cameras most people are use to, the rear screen is not a view finder. Like a traditional SLR camera, the photographer must use the view finder to frame their shots.

The controls for this camera are easy to navigate and with in reach while holding the camera to take a photo. The control stick is simple to use and in a perfect location for your thumb to manipulate. Some of the functions can be accessed via more then one route. Which is very convenient.

This camera is extremely simple to use. Anyone with a little photography experience can pick this camera up and expect to shoot great photos. The menus are easy to understand with little use of codes or symbols that would require the photographer to refer to the manual.

The photos can be stunning. On a smaller setting a 8 GB memory stick will hold over 3500 photos. Even on a larger photo setting this memory stick will hold 100s of digital photos. The camera can also shoot in HD format, and with the correct cable, hook right up to your HD TV for a slide show.

The manual is great. It provides a ton of information on the use of the camera and all of its features. There is no need to purchase a third-party book. Although if the user wished to, there are many to chose from.

The only negative feature I have found with this Sony Alpha A700 DSLR Camera is the lens selection. Although you are likely to find the exact lens to suit your needs, the selection is far less then a Canon or Nikon SLR. This is because Sony uses a proprietary Lens system.
