Review of AirCat Air Drill 3/8 inch, 1800 RPM, 4 CFM, Reversible - ACR4314R (ergonomic, buy)

If you're looking for a quiet drill that is effortless to use, you should try out an air drill. If you're like me, it'll immediately inspire you to complete all those odd jobs around the house that you've been putting off because of the noise and mess ordinary drills make. Presuming, that is, you find a good quality, quiet and easy-to-handle tool.
The US made AirCat Air Drill model number ACR4314R is quite a find, even though it is relatively pricey. But then it does rank as a professional tool. It boasts a particularly low noise level of only 85dB but has enough torque and power to drill into just about any material both forward and in reverse, providing of course you use the right sized and type of bit.
The AirCat ACR4314R will operate at a speed of up to 1,800 RPM. You can probably compare its power to that of a good quality 12 volt electric drill.
Like all air tools (or pneumatic tools) this AirCat air drill uses compressed air instead of electrical power. So the good news is that it is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Generally air tools are more durable than conventional electric power tools because they have fewer moving parts. This also makes them easier to use. It also means that you don't have to rely on finding a power point to use the drill, although you will, of course need an air supply (probably a 33 gallon compressor which is what we use). You will also need to buy air couplers and at least one air hose to be able to use the drill, which understandably adds to the cost factor.
We really like the keyless chuck feature and the fact that there is an exhaust system that keeps debris created by the drilling process from flying into your eyes (and lungs for that matter) when you use the tool. This particular exhaust system works through the handle, which is leading-edge technology. Most other pneumatic tools work by releasing the exhaust air through front vents. With this tool, the discharged air doesn't develop any back pressure either, which is largely why it retains its power and reduces the noise factor.
We also like the ergonomic handle - it's the patented design that you will find incorporated in all AirCat tools. Somehow your hands don't get as tired holding the drill for relatively lengthy periods of time.
