This watch is made by the Swiss company Victorinox, which is famous for the Swiss army knife and for their range of rugged, military style watches. The Airboss Mach 3 is a good example of this style as it has a dial that is modelled on the dashboard of a WWII fighter plane. In common with most military watches the dial is black and has easy to read, large, luminous hands.
Apart from the looks of this watch I was also attracted to it because it has a chronograph function provided by the two smaller, subsidiary dials and a minute counter which is on the main dial. This latter feature is a most unusual one as most chronographs have 3 sub dials making the face of the watch look very cluttered and it can be difficult to read the time. The chronograph function allows you to time 1/10 second, seconds, minutes and hours. It also has a date window at the 10 o'clock position. Another feature which I find indispensable is a rotating bezel which counts down from up to 60 minutes. This is marvellous when you want to know how long you've got left before an appointment, etc.
The watch is very well made with a strong, highly polished stainless steel case. It is fitted with a good quality, brown calfskin strap which matches its period looks perfectly. Another sign of the attention to quality is the fitting of a real glass anti-reflective crystal (this is the cover over the dial) which is most often made of acrylic these days. Acrylic is less likely to crack or shatter than glass but it is much less scratch resistant.
In keeping with its easy to read pilots watch styling the watch is a little bit bigger than average. It has a satisfying chunky feel although it is not any heavier than most other watches. This watch has a quality Swiss quartz movement which makes its timekeeping extremely accurate. It is also water resistant down to 100 meters. I have used when swimming and it shows no sign of any problems.
The Airboss Mach 3 is a hard watch to beat if you are looking for a watch with quartz accuracy, Swiss quality and an interesting style. At around $700 it is not particularly cheap but in my view it offers excellent value for money and is just a bit different from the crowd.
