The Omron HEM-711AC is apparently the top selling home blood pressure monitor in the U.S. and competitively priced at $99.99. This is in the middle of the range of upper arm cuffs that Omron produce, but Omron's name is trusted and reliable so I put my faith in the HEM-711AC.
It stores up to 60 readings, making it easy to plot patterns in blood pressure and to learn how to control your own pressure rather than relying on medicinal solutions. Omron don't cut any corners with the complete package either, which includes an AC adaptor so that you can use the monitor with either batteries or a power supply depending on where you are and what you're doing. It also comes with a 5 year warranty.
Unfortunately, when I first tried the monitor I was confronted with readings that were much too high and occasionally much too low, which made me instantly suspicious as I regularly have my pressure monitored by a trained physician. After seeking advice, I learned that the upper arm cuff was too tight and adversely affecting the readings, so I purchased a larger cuff and tried again. This time readings were much more predictable and when I compared them with readings taken by a doctor I found that the HEM-711AC is very accurate.
I now trust this monitor, but I feel that my initial problems could have been averted if the manufacturer offered a wider variation of sizes or better explained how tight the cuff should be. Other than that, the HEM-711AC is very easy to use and has a large screen that I would imagine would be very helpful for elderly users or people with poor eyesight. It alerts you with subtle noises that aren't distracting and looks professional and sturdy. Most importantly, my model has been dropped more than three times and never shows any signs of damage, so the monitor is definitely good value for money.
