I wasn't getting a metal detector because it was going to pad my retirement. It was just something to do on the beach on early mornings before everyone showed up. Of course, the name is a come on to make you think you can find gold doubloons and pieces of eight.
First, I have to say I don't have a lot of experience with metal detectors, and I couldn't really understand much about what I read in the reviews when shopping for them, so it was a bit of a stab in the dark when I found the Treasure Hunter Vision 3030 in a local store. The $695.95 MSRP price would make you think that the detector was a good one, but I can't say that it is.
I wasn't having any luck on my hunts other than an occasional beer cap, so I tried putting coins on the bare ground to see what it would do. There are supposed to be three distinct sounds for different metals per the instructions, but I couldn't tell much difference, and in addition to that, I could hardly get a reading on the coins lying in plain sight.
I exchanged batteries, fiddled with the adjustments, and that resulted in just about the same results. Over time, I have found some pocket change and other stuff, but nothing deeper than four inches or so. I'm not sure if this is an inferior unit or all of these are as bad. I usually leave it set on all metals because there isn't much in the way of discrimination anyway.
I didn't pay full price for this unit or I would really be upset with my purchase. At some point, I hope to buy another metal detector, but the next one won't be this brand. Check around before you invest in this cheap made toy.
