When my family and I decided to take up camping again a few years ago, we were faced with a dilemma. Our two-man pup tent was no longer large enough for our camping needs, and while we could shuck the pup tent off on the kids, my wife and I needed to buy a new tent. In our search for the perfect tent, I stumbled across the Sierra Designs Zeta 4 Person Tent.
At a trail weight of 7lbs and 15oz., and with things like a Swivel Cap Assembly and Jake's Foot for quick set ups and take downs, and (of all things) a swivel hub to make it easy to assemble and connect the support poles, the Zeta seemed like the perfect choice in outdoor tents, and if the price tag seemed a little steep at $339.00, Sierra Designs had an excellent reputation in the outdoor camping niche, so we figured that we were making a solid choice.
The Zeta is a very well-made tent, and we never had any bad experiences with leaks or tears, and the only real snag was when the O ring that held the poles together tended to get caught in the fabric, and with too much pressure (put on it by young active children) it would pop loose and the tent would start to collapse.
Unfortunately, after only a few camping experiences, it became obvious that we had chosen the wrong tent for our needs, for while we had been making our selection based on prior camping experience (being young and active and childless), we had never considered the fact that we might prefer a tent in which we could stand up, or in which the whole family could gather at supper time, or that came with a screened sitting area so that we could kick back and enjoy the view without getting eaten alive.
So, while I would highly recommend the tent to young childless campers, who are just using the tent for sleeping, I would definitely have to steer the camper with children or who want rattling around space to another design or brand.
