Frigidaire FPCC3685KS Professional 36" Induction Hybrid Cook Top

Our kitchen was built for the then standard 30" size cook top, which presented a problem when we looked at the 36" induction unit from Frigidaire, specifically model FPCC3685KS.
We had a cabinet installer look at our counter top to be sure that we could make the unit work before we bought it, and we didn't really need to modify anything except the size of the hole to accommodate it.
My gripe with the old cook top was the buttons that sat right in the middle. They were constantly getting spills and splatters on them, and I wore the numbers off trying to keep them clean.
I wanted a cook top that had the controls located in an alternate location, but that was not a standard feature on the models we looked at. Because the controls are off to the side on the Frigidaire FPCC3685KS, it is a better situation for my cooking style.
The extra 6" doesn't really gain any cook space, because most of it is taken up with the side-located controllers. The unit is pricey, ranging from $1129-$1179 depending on where you purchase.
The thing that sold us, though, on this electric unit was what the sales clerk told us about the energy savings. Induction cooking saves 70% on gas costs and 20% on standard electric costs, so we considered the energy savings an offset for the high initial purchase price.
We had considered going to gas until we learned about the energy savings to be had on this Frigidaire hybrid cook top. We were also told that this top is more responsive than gas, so that you can go from low to high or vice versa much faster.
I really like two things about this appliance. With five cooking elements, it's hard not to have enough places to cook when you are preparing a large meal, and the added feature of combining two elements to cook something in a large pot works well once you learn how to use it.
The brochure says that the cook top itself stays cooler and heat is transferred directly to the pot or pan. I believe that is true because you can almost lay your hand on the cook top area even when the elements are wide open, just not on the elements themselves.
