The Panasonic NN-SD997S Prestige is a big (19.4" high x 23.9" wide), sturdy microwave, that has clearly been built to last. In view of this, it is surprisingly quiet; unusual for any microwave, let alone one as powerful as this.

Cooking with 1250 watts, this microwave is extremely fast and powerful. The large interior means that even casserole dishes and cookie trays will fit comfortably on the plate, without scraping the sides. The turntable mechanism is also very strong, and does not tilt, even when heavy dishes are placed off-centre.

Equipped with a 'sensor cooking' facility, the microwave will automatically cook your food for the correct amount of time. It measures the amount of steam emitted by the food, meaning it can adjust the cooking time accordingly. There is no need to set a timer - just close the door and press the sensor button. After many uses, this function has performed perfectly almost every time. It truly is remarkable.

Another great timesaver is the fact that the stainless steel finish is fingerprint resistant - just a quick wipe is all that is required, to clean the exterior. The door is in a half-mirrored finish, which looks very stylish, but does mean that it is difficult to see the food inside clearly.

The popcorn setting works surprisingly well. Sometimes there are a few kernels left uncooked, but that is so much better than having lots of burnt ones, which is often the result with other microwaves.

Defrosting food is straightforward to do, and this microwave performs very well at the task. Food is evenly defrosted without being cooked. It is important to note that the instructions do contain advice about how to cover and plate certain foods before defrosting. For instance, patches of thin skin on meat should be covered in aluminium foil to prevent cooking.

This model is fitted with a dial rather than a keypad (which are notorious for breaking). It is very simple to use, but the blue, multi-language LED operation guide, offers additional assistance if required.

This is not the cheapest microwave on the market, but it is very powerful, fast and reliable. The functions actually do what they are meant to do, and it is so simple to operate. Being so sturdy, the Panasonic NN-SD997S Prestige is built to last a long time, so all things considered, it offers superb value for money.
