Has anyone noticed that the washing machine never goes on the fritz when the laundry is done but rather when you must do a load of laundry to go to work? Well the old Whirlpool it the dust from over work. Therefore, it was time to buy a new washer.
While the optimum would be to buy front loading computer operated machines that do everything but fold the laundry the budget was not sufficient to allow such a purchase. Retuning to reality we set out to deal with reality. We knew the Maytag repairman was not doing much so we sought out a Home Depot store with a $500 budget.
We found the Maytag Centennial 4.0 Cu. Ft. IEC Capacity Washer on sale for $450 that fit our budget well. It had a 3.5 cubic foot load capacity that fits our family needs. Since we have a new home built to the highest energy standards, we will purchase ENERGY STAR qualified appliances as we replace them.
It comes with a commercial transmission, which is the heart of the laundry washing process as well as a stainless steel tub. The four temperature settings were all we need since we only in reality use to of them. This is why we didn't feel the need to have a space age washer with computer controls adequate for the space station. It cam with a quiet operation feature which would be nice if the washer was installed inside the house, ours is in the garage so it really doesn't make that much difference.
In terms of performance, it does the job, fresh smelling clean clothes, reliable performance for items from sleeping bags to lingerie. The agitator works the clothes over and gets the dirt out despite the larger load capacity.
I was mildly surprised that it did not come with water hoses but we used our old hoses with new hose washers that seem to be working out fine. It only has a one-year warranty but if the reputation of Maytag bears out, we will not need the Maytag repairman so he is safe.
One of the other negatives we feel is that since it is a top loader, we have to lift the wet clothing over the top and into the dryer, which is a front loader so consequently there is considerable bending over and straightening up involved. For older retired persons this can become a difficult task.
