Haier 6000 BTU Window Air Conditioner
The Haier 6000 BTU Air Conditioner has been purchased by my family many times over for each room of our home. We do not have central or whole house air conditioning and as such we have window air conditioners in about four rooms of our home. Each one is this same model, the most recent one purchased in the early summer of 2009. Retail price for these units are approximately $115 dollars but sometimes can be found at lower prices at some retail locations. I believe we purchased ours at Lowes for about $110 dollars.
The best feature of this model is that the unit is programmable. My husband is the last one to leave home during the work week and has programmed the air conditioner to turn on about a half an hour before I get home from work. This way the unit is not running all day and wasting energy cooling our home for no reason. We have also programmed the Haier in our bedroom to start around 10 pm in the evening, giving enough time to cool off the room before our bedtimes.
The filter is very easy to remove and clean something which needs to be done at least several times throughout the cooling season. The 6000 Unit will easily cool about 250 square feet of space. Of course individuals who have larger rooms to cool will want to buy a unit that has more BTU's. For us, this size works just fine. Sometimes, our rooms get too cooled off and we will switch the unit from cooling to just fan, which is good for those days that are not too hot.
The remote control that comes with the unit is very handy. No one has to get up to turn the unit up or down or to shut it off or turn it on. Just be sure to remember where you put the remote as it is very small. The unit is pretty quiet in its operation, although when they get older they seem to run louder. The new Haier we purchased last year is very quiet; at times you wonder if it is running at all.
Although this model is for a window that opens up and down, there are Haier models for older homes that have windows that open from side to side. In addition, there are also free standing room models that do not have to be used in the window.
