Variscope Series 100 - 40x-2000x Binocular Compound Microscope

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

I needed a microscope for use at my home lab, but wasn't interested in spending the firm's money on one that was so very expensive. The Variscope Compound Microscope was my choice because I was familiar with the brand and was looking for something where I could use both eyes.

Of the positive things about this microscope, the price of $433.30 is very reasonable for magnification of up to 2000x. The real color of things is a delightful change from some microscopes that allow different hues to detract from the detail of the object being observed. I have had poorer results from equipment that was priced much higher than this microscope.

The binocular vision has good adjustment for each eye so that I can see very well even with my farsighted vision problems. The variable intensity of the light is another valuable feature when viewing living organisms because reduced light and heat allows them to exist longer under the lens.

I was somewhat disappointed in the quality of the lens because there is some distortion that bears noting. It is not to the extent that it negates the usefulness of the equipment, but the trained eye can tell that something is off a little. The problem is most probably with this particular unit rather than with all off the microscopes of this make.

Based upon how critical detail has to be with projects you may be working with, this binocular compound microscope might be all that you need for your laboratory needs. I believe it is one of the better values you can find in a microscope in the affordable range. If I were making the choice again, I think it would be the same one. There are better microscopes available, but probably nothing is better in this price range. I give it a four of five rating.
