Every year we go to the beach for vacation, and every year someone mentions wishing we had a metal detector to have some fun searching for "treasures" in the sand. Finally, I broke down and bought the Bounty Hunter TrackerIV/TK4-PL. With a list price of $129.95, I figured if nothing else, that was worth a few hours of vacation entertainment.

Initially, I compared the Tracker with the Bounty Hunter QD2GWP Quick Draw metal detector, which lists for more at $249, but I opted for the lesser expensive model because I knew my kids would be using it and saw no sense in spending more on a first time detector purchase.

The Tracker was a breeze to put together and after buzzing through the manual, I was experimenting with my treasure hunting in less than 20 minutes. It is lightweight and portable enough that the kids can use it with ease and the convenient adjustable shaft allows me to adjust for whoever's using it.

Granted the Quick Draw has some nice features to compensate for the added cost, including a carrying bag, LCD digital readout and a visual indicator of metal type, and I can see opting for those features in a future model if it is something the kids stick with.

I did end up referring back for a longer read time on the manual to further understand the tone discrimination and how the detector works. I also found that adding the optional detector headphones made the experience much more enjoyable and according to reports, using them extends battery life.

A great thing about the Tracker is that it is waterproof, and that is impressive for a metal detector in this price range and extends the area you can search for hidden treasures and loot.

The detector has half paid for itself just with the coins we've found with it. It has been a great model to start learning with, and the more we use it, the more we can see how some added features would make the hobby more fun and possibly profitable.

I've heard many complain it does not detect gold well, but we were not really thinking we'd find much of that anyway. For finding pocket change, it works great and we've cashed in on numerous occasions.

For a starter model to learn the basics, the Bounty Hunter tracker is worth the cost and after that, you can decide whether you want to move to a higher priced model.

User-Friendly: the device is easy to manoeuvre and operate. The handle extends allowing individuals with a different physique to adjust it as per their requirements.
