The Bounty Hunter Junior Metal Detector
My husband has a full size metal detector but it is much too heavy for our older grandchildren to use and this junior size metal detector, The Bounty Hunter Junior is just about the correct size for children who are about 10-17 years of age. Many times children like to look for what they call buried treasure and really get a kick out of finding long lost items.
Children can use this metal detector outside in their own yard, at friends' homes or at the beach. The beach is a great place to look for lost items, from spare change to lost jewelry. My husband and grandson found a bracelet with their machines that I still have today. All metal detectors are made to work mainly outdoors, as using them in your home will not really work. The appliances in the average home will interfere with any signals picked up by the detector.
If your child or grandchild is going to use a small metal detector such as the Bounty Hunter Junior, you need to know that they are not cheap, but really not that expensive. Retail for this item is around $149.00 however some can be purchased on sale for as little as $119.00. Children will need supervision by an adult for a time until they get used to handling the detector. Of course, it really pays for the child to practice outside for a bit to get the hang of things. The operations manual that comes with the detector has step by step details on how to practice looking for metal objects outside, and how the machine distinguishes between coins, pop tabs and other items. Taking the time to practice with your child can really make sure that he or she has a positive experience and realizes all the fun that can be had with a metal detector.
Children will need to learn how to sweep the ground narrowing their search, especially once they hear the familiar beeping sound that indicates some treasure may have been found! There are several very important things to teach any child who will be using a metal detector. First, children must be taught that they are not to go onto private property to search unless they have the permission of the owners. Don't let your child believe that they can search anywhere they like, as historic sites and preserved regions will definitely be off limits for them.
Anytime someone finds something, he or she will need to fill in the hole that is made, so that they are leaving the ground as they found it. This is really important and respectful of the good earth.
The warranty on the Bounty Hunter Junior is pretty good, with the manufacturer giving the owner five years of coverage against defects and materials, of course all under normal usage.
