GE JVM3670WF SpaceMaker XL 1800 Microwave

Rating: 2 out of 5
  • Currently 2.0/5.0

This is a very simple over-range microwave oven by GE. The unit is approximately 36" wide and 15" high, with an advertised 1.8 cubic foot capacity. I acquired one of these units when it came pre-installed in our new home. While it performs reasonably well, it is clearly a cheaply made unit.

Firstly, the few bright points: This microwave has good power (1100 Watts) and a reasonable amount of flexibility in terms of cooking settings and power levels. The defrost setting works very well on both the automatic "by the pound" setting, or you can specify your own defrosting time. The touch pad is responsive and registers selections on the first push every time. The clock is simple to set and the built in cooking timer is both handy and loud enough to get your attention clear across the house, which is handy for baking if your oven does not have a timer of its own.

Unfortunately, there are far more negatives associated with this unit than positives. The turntable started having issues after less than 6 months of use. It still turns, but in a jerky fashion. Also, the ventilation system is incredibly loud for the size of the unit. One of the design features promoted with this particular microwave is that the vent is hidden on the bottom of the unit (rather than on the front as with many other models)- but I would gladly deal with a more visible vent if it would operate more quietly.

Ultimately this microwave is ok if you're looking for a simple machine on a budget, but even for its price range I'm sure there are better choices out there. I have every intention to replace this unit in the near future for one with quieter ventilation and a more durable turntable.
