Bissell ProHeat 2X CleanShot Upright Carpet Cleaner

Rating: 3 out of 5
  • Currently 3.0/5.0

This carpet steamer by Bissell carries a list price of $349.99 and has features on par with those of other brands in this price range.

I purchased one of these units approximately three years ago and was initially very pleased with its performance. The house we were renting at the time had cream colored carpets, which were nearly impossible to keep clean in a busy household with two black dogs. The Bissell ProHeat is very easy to use- filling and emptying the water tank is simple, and the cleaning solution reservoir is easy to get on and off. The built in heating really steps up the cleaning power and the heavy duty brushes on the bottom did a great job of digging out embedded pet hair. It also has a setting for tile, and we found it works great in this capacity as well- much faster than mopping and does a great job of scrubbing the grout.

This steamer also features a little spin-wheel indicator that shows when cleaning solution is flowing, so it's easy to tell when it needs a refill. It has a wide footprint which minimizes the number of passes needed to cover a room and the suction is powerful enough that it got most of the water out of the carpet during cleaning, so the floor didn't take long to dry afterward.

I would have rated this steamer much higher if not for the fact that we started having problems with it about a year after purchase. The brushes started to slow down considerably and eventually stopped turning all together. We removed the bottom cover of the machine in an attempt to identify the problem, but could find nothing wrong- there were no snags or clogs and the drive belt was fine. I can only guess there is something wrong with the motor, and we have yet to get it repaired. We did make extensive use of it in the one year it worked properly, but did not abuse it- so I'm very disappointed in the durability of this machine.
