(1) Everyone looks out for themselves/driven to self-preservation. This is a natural instinctual concept that is true to all living organisms.
(2) Everyone has the innate desire to be helpful to those that they value, unless doing so supercedes #1 in their conscious or subconscious mind.
(3) People are boundedly rational; they don't make decisions that are in their best interest all the time even if there is only an intention to do so.
(4) Society socializes people into adhering to a set moral and cultural value system. This is for two reasons: It gives the individual an understanding of the self and their surroundings and also stabilizes civilization.
(5) There is no intrinsic point to life. Humans create their own meanings to life due to their higher-level of cognitive capability granting them the ability to. Their concepts of life and what makes it meaningful is entirely constructed by #4 (society at all levels; from the family unit to national boundaries and beyond).
(6) Mortality salience - one's need to cope with the absolute realities of eventual death - is entirely a societally indoctrinated concept. Religion is one of the symptoms of this (although, to be fair, religion is more appropriately classified as a societal indoctrination tool as discussed in #4).
