I was on the pm shift for almost 25 years and my job went to 12 hour night shifts. I work some doubles from 3pm to 730am some 4 hour shifts and some pm shifts from 3pm to 1130. Nights is killing me. I'm happiest on the pm shift. My body is so messed up from doing doubles once or twice a week for the last year. I don't sleep much and my anxiety level is through the roof. I like the atmosphere on nights but staying up all night is tough and increases health problems.
I've worked nights for many years. I'd prefer 3-11, but my job doesn't have straight evening shifts, only a mix of day/evening or nights. I also feel like death around 4am and would happily go to sleep then. On vacation or off, I go to sleep around 3 or 4. It's those last few hours and driving home in the light that are hard.
I also like the lack of supervision and informality of nights. It's like an alternative universe to day shift. There is a great minimum of self-importance among night people, and usually a good camaraderie. Also, you don't have to be liked a whole lot to get along with nights, because people just are happy that you show up ready to work and they can go home.
When I worked day/evening or days, I was a wreck. Could not sleep until 3 or 4am, had to be in at 7a. Also had to dress somewhat better, a genuine issue for me. I really prefer the informality of nights.
I do think it's had a really bad effect on my health and mood and I am continually tired. When off, I often sleep for about 24 hours with a lot of dreaming, like a detox, no matter how much I sleep during the day. I have a bit over three more years to go to the pension.
