I know of two different guys who killed themselves after breakups in their 20s. Not sure if that helps.

I know one guy who was in the army and he killed himself in his parents house when he got back from Iraq.

One relative in the 70s as well.

So I know 4 men who have and 0 women.

But in the end I agree, men, specifically young men, couldn't seem to cope with these "new" pressures. Coming back from the Vietnam war as a traitor, not a hero, with a wife who wanted to work; who was never home to help with the kids, led men to drink, while looking through employment ads.

This graph (of death by Cirrhosis) seems to match up pretty well to the OP's.
I don't think you can blame the war in Vietnam for too much, as this Canadian graph, where the war didn't happen, shows similar trends for the time period:

Just a possible thought, but maybe they simply felt completely unloved, unlovable, and unwanted, like no one cared about them at all or would ever truly love them...intense anguished feelings like that over the long term can destroy a man entirely, from the inside...

Maybe he couldn't live with his conscience? Of course that's an assumption. Maybe it was the PTSD.

Pressure to preform, pressure to provide, pressure to succeed. Also military suicides are at an all time high. Men are just under a different kind of pressure than women. Women, in general, won't commit suicide.

Men are expendable. If a woman kills herself, it's a tragedy. If a man does it, he must have had issues.

There's something to this. In general, I think women have a larger support system and are more likely to ask for help or talk about their feelings. Men are socialized to be strong and silent and internalize everything.

You all have to note that these graphs are only measuring completed suicides. So, this is totally disregarding attempts.

Statistically, males and females attempt at a fairly similar rate, however males are much more likely to complete their suicides due to the means that they use. Males are more likely to use much more lethal means for suicides than females.
