Sounds like your mother and the men were abusive. Just in different ways. She should have called the police and they both should have gotten professional help. Her to stop pushing men to hit her and to stop finding men who would physically lash out at her. And the guys to stop hitting people.

No, it's not always physical abuse. You can mentally abuse people. I've known to lesbian couples that divorced over this.
