I'm not into alternative music, which ultimately I think Electronica is truly an alternative genre as opposed to something like so-called "alternative rock", yet I've still heard of a few of the names you threw out, which is mostly because I had a friend/co-worker who was hardcore into Trance.

I think a good idea for another thread would be the question: "Why (and how) do some people go off he beaten path when it comes to music?".
"Why" is a lot easier to answer than "how."

Why? Because if no one invented new music, we'd all be listening to Gregorian chant right now.

I always thought country music was hookey and redneck. Then, in a step exercise class they played Garth Brook's "The Dance" and I was hooked. Been a fan since the 90's now. Love belting out "Beer for your horses" or many of the Rascal Flatts songs. Big fan of Wynonna. This, from an old gal raised on the east coast! Three preset stations on my car radio are country! My DH tolerates this at times, tho he's a blues & Van Morrison type......

Small town angst? How about small town love?

Correct, it only induces suicidal thoughts in some listeners.

You're also correct about the worship and exaltation of rural life. The rural folk always value their families and simple principles more than those urban fellers.

Rascal Flatts is the country equivalent of Journey. Chicks love Rascall Flatts.I was actually surprised when I first heard the band was composed of men and not three singing vaginas.

Country music reminds me personally of the racism, excessive patriotism and xenophobia of the city where I was raised.

No, some people like jazz because they truly love jazz, like me. When I was a little girl, I heard Take Five by Brubeck and I was hooked. I spent much of my youth on a farm, milking cows, pitching hay and riding tractors, but when I hear country music, it's like nails on a chalkboard. Nothing to do with "cred" or being trendy.

"Moments" - Emerson Drive
"How Do You Get That Lonely" - Blaine Larsen
"Why" - Rascal Flatts
