I don't really have anything to add to the thread title. I simply want an answer to that one question. If you're wondering why I want an answer, it's because I almost find myself in that boat a this point. Really, save for 1 hope and 2 dreams, I'm basically burnt out of both and not striving for anything anymore.

Answer: That you don't think love, joy, happiness and a sense of purpose and achievement are worthy goals and worth aiming/struggling for.

Content with mediocrity? Fed up? Feel hopeless?

Could mean any number of things. Depends on exactly how you define hope and dreams, how (un)realistic they are, your base assumptions / beliefs, etc. Depends somewhat on your age as well. Also depends on how willing you are to flex with the situation, modify your beliefs / assumptions / hopes / dreams, change habits, etc.

I am 56 and fairly tired of living but that has motivated me to let go of old expectations and figure out what's actually achievable. It's also been liberating to let go of such attachments as life is too short (and getting shorter all the time!) for frustration and disappointment.

More likely in my experience is that he thinks they are worthy but not achievable. Quite possibly either doesn't know how to go about it or is hamstrung by certain beliefs / taboos. Not enough info here to say, though.

I look around me and see loads of people who have few if any hopes, dreams or aspirations.

It's the difference between being a winner in life, or a loser.

Winners always think something better is around the corner, and they prepare for that.

Losers think nothing good will ever happen so miss out on opportunity after opportunity.

I notice you say "one or two hopes and dreams" which isn't exactly NO hopes and dreams, so you're not being honest anyway, just pessimistic and gloomy.

No hopes and dreams: on the up side, it might mean you have achieved and acquired all the hopes/dreams you ever wanted, so you have no more requests to ask of life

on the down side, it might be you feel lost and there is nothing in the future to hope/dream for

i've experienced both... like when in my 30's i thought "wow i have it all! all my longed for dreams are here right now, and there's nothing more to wish/hope for"!

now turning 70 (birthday tomorrow yayyyyyy!!!) i find a million new hopes/dreams.... hope that i will get to live lots more years, hope for continuing good health, dream about & look forward to that next vacation. really, to me it's not so much that i (or any of us) we will be given or attain future hopes & dreams, but that we all keep those hopes & dreams alive!

Means that you're more in touch with reality than people who have vivid hopes and dreams.

Means you need to develop a passion for more practical things closer to here & now, like baking cookies or planting a garden. Walking out the door for any reason becomes an adventure to love or loathe.

In some ways this could mean that you have achieved all your goals. Nothing wrong with transition to a sustaining lifestyle. Appreciate what you've accomplished and relax.
