I think some tattoos can be pretty cool, but I've never had much of a desire to get one. I agree with what some other people have said, getting a tattoo is just another way of expressing yourself, like fashion, piercings, hairstyle, artwork in your home etc.

And in 20 years, getting tattoos removed will be mainstream.

Honestly, if I were young, I'd seriously consider becoming either a dermatologist with a specialty in tattoo removal or a plastic surgeon with a specialty in piercing repair. I think there's going to be serious money to be made in both fields.
My feelings EXACTLY!!!

The need to express myself has never crossed my mind. The other thing that puzzles me is why someone could be proud of a tattoo. The tattoo artist is the one who did the artwork, the person with the tatoo just sat or or laid there while the tattoo artist created the artwork. What is there to be proud of?

Perhaps displaying their willingness to suffer pain & discomfort is part of the equation. It's true they aren't displaying their own artistic talent, but the person does dictate what that art is going to be about, usually something important to them.
