I think that's what it is. Must be for texting or IMing. I have been sitting in a cafe and due to my ADD (self-diagnosed), it really irritates me and is distracting. I just don't get why people feel like it's okay to do this and that they won't bother anyone.

Because they want to know the instant moment that someone has called, texted, e-mailed them, and when it's their turn to come up with a word on "Words For Friends".

I have no idea what that is (see how uncool and out of it I am ) but I assume it's a game? Whatever. I just wish they'd silence their notifications since they're right next to the blasted phone.
LOL--it happened with this girl and I turned around and looked like I was wondering where that irritating sound was coming from...Maybe she'll take the hint?

Yep, it's a game.
Something like sitting in Starbucks or someplace like that, I would silence my phone. If you're constantly having a conversation with someone through your phone, I don't see the purpose of having the sound notification on.
But if I'm running errands or shopping I'd have the notifications on.

Maybe because they don't realize someone so petulant as to find something as common place and petty as a phone beep is sitting next to them...

Obviously can't speak for everyone; however, there are people who 'think' they look very popular and have a ton of friends if they are contacted frequently on their phones.

Additionally, having ADD is your cross to bear and you can not realistically expect the world to cater to your specific needs. If having ADD is making it difficult for you to function daily, especially in public, then you should seek professional treatment. But in order to do that, you would have to get a professional diagnosis, not a self diagnosis.

I'll bet 99% of the time it is because they forgot to turn the notifications to an appropriate level. I do it all the time. I simply forget.

I have heard people playing "words with friends" too.
