116dB Human body begins to perceive vibration from low frequencies
Again, irrelevant.

The question being asked in the thread (on the psychology forum, not the health forum) is essentially "what type of person blasts his stereo?"

It's got nothing to do with the type of car
It's got nothing to do with the effect loud music has on hearing.
It's got nothing to do with OSHA loudness standards for employees.
It's got nothing to do with the type of music.

I think it's just self-indulgence.

Power! So many of us have so little power over our lives today, and these Noise Terrorists are no different. They love the power they feel of driving down a street and, knowing full well, they're terrorizing most of the neighborhood. Ah! The power!!!

But these people are among the greatest wimps you'll ever face! I've confronted them myself and they run like scared rabbits! I was so disturbed by someone next to me at an intersection, deafening me, I got out of the car and pounded on the roof of his car, and I didn't even get the chance to tell him to turn his music down! Right thru the red light he went! And who'd be scared of a 63 YO senior citizen!!!

But, according to NoiseFree.org, they're cracking down on these Noise Terrorists all over the country:

Oregon: $1500 fine for a first offense
Pequannock, NJ: fines up to $3,000
Chicago, IL: $300 first offense, then up to $1,000
Akron, OH: on the spot confiscation of their stereo system
Louisiana: $150 fine, loss of license for 30 days
Topeka, KS: up to $500 fine and up to 6 months in jail
Savannah, GA: Maximum fine of $1,000 and 12 months in jail
Jasper, FL: fine of up to $500, up to 60 days in jail or both
Buffalo, NY: up to $1500 fine and 15 days in jail. Also considering ordinance to penalize gas staions and convenience stores for allowing, yes allowing, boom cars into their parking lots

Noise is a health issue, any noise changes the chemistry of the body. In extreme cases, loud noise can trigger heart attacks in some people.

Loud pipes on motorcycles serve a purpose. Bikers don't care if anyone is looking at them, they don't imagine anyone would have such a mundane life as to take time to look at them.

I ride a motorcycle. When I had "quiet" pipes, I ended up in the hospital for 8 months. A mommy in a mini van was busy talking on the phone and (from what she said) "I didn't see her! I just couldn't hear her! I heard a horn but didn't know where it came from" (and slipped into my lane and over my bike and dang near tore my left leg off).

Now, my pipes roar. Nobody mistakes that sound and when I crack the pipes (not to say "look at me" but "look OUT for me") every cage straightens up in it's lane until they figure out where the motorcycle is.

Now, that being said, I'm a rider of almost 38 years now. I don't weave in and out of traffic and I'm super careful, but people in cars are doing things other than simply driving. On a bike, you're paying attention, in a car, not so much.

I find it quite trashy behavior but am looking to understand what is really driving it. Sometimes I think it's a way to draw attention to themselves.
It is message to any one around - I'm force and you all around are cowards. I always go on door or to the car to say them to shoot down or will call police. Fight many times about it and will fight again. It is way how tugs terrorize normal people. But me not. If some of us will lie in grave so be but no loud music 2 blocks around me. I have some tolerance during day. After midnight they know rule.

What about those morons on their loud Harleys? Most of them are illegally equipped with loud mufflers. How many times have they been cited?

I always say, "Could you turn it up a little bit louder, please? I can't *quite* hear how small your <male reproductive organ> is."
