When my mother was young, in the 1940s, she worked at the Macy's in New York City and occasionally the management would send in mystery shoppers to check up on the employees. These older women who would try to annoy them the way only older ladies with New York accents can do, asking lots of questions, never satisfied with anything, contradicting themselves, trying to get a rise out of the employees.

In those days you just smiled and were polite to everyone and put up with it. Nowadays, they expect you the customer to make them happy. I've seen it all. I walk into the store and say "Hi!" to the store clerk, who just sullenly glares back at me. I've asked whether they had some item, and they respond, "Did you see it on the shelf?" (No, I just spent 20 minutes looking for it; that's why I'm asking you). I've been given wrong change and when I point it out, they just wordlessly correct it, no apologies or word of thanks (Even when it's in my favor I always point it out).

I have no patience for self-centered store clerks. If they don't like their jobs, there's plenty of other work out there that is more appropriate for them--warehouses, landscaping, custodial, dish washing.

I would agree, most new hires go in with other expectatons, and the leave within 2 mo.. specially the younger generation, they are not putting up with it -they want to make some fast money, but don't ask them for too much for $8 hr, most I know-are in college. so forget the dishwashers- The work ethics are horrible- but at the same token, it's just a part time. On the same note, One teacher worked at my store and asked to be dropped to 2 days a week as things changed at her school- they said NO- she quit.--good employee! A Coastie,,, also needed to take some classed for a promotion...they would not adjust his schedule, he quit. So we know NOT to expect too much from the company, they no longer invest into their workers. We are also doing the job of 2 or 3, see anyone one around to help you? what are you, the consumer expecting? You go complain to the MGR.. OHH NOOO -not the companies fault for not having enough coverage, it's the poor employee whose ran around for 7 hrs in 3 dept helping folks problem-
RETAIL has changed considerably over the last few years,,,
Poor employees who had to deal with the idiots of Black Fri fighting and so forth,,,- same thing goes for shop-lifters, HIRE a darn LP to watch them out and chase them...they can take the store, not getting shot for some stupid item- but they want us to..
again I invite you- come one day and spend the day with me... at the store!
I have weeks- and them I am OUT of there. Thank you Lord.

My time is more important than your time. That is the fact of life when you're in customer service and I've done plenty of it in my life. Get used to that and own it. Customer service work equals being a servant to the customer; your job is to serve me.

You know what's amusing? Watching the look on some self entitled jerks face when the cops escort them off the premises after we ban then from the store for acting like an A-hole to an employee.
It's a business, a two way affair where one party wants to sell some good or service and the other party wants to buy it. Servant my patootie!

What exactly does it mean when a store says they are open until 9pm? Does it mean that you can walk into the door all the way up til 9pm and be treated as any other customer? Many restaurants seem to work like this. Does it mean you can come in but you have to be concluding your transaction by 9? Most retail stores seem to work like this. Does it mean you have to be finished and out the door by 9? Some shops and places like museums work like this. Everyone has their own interpretation but there is no universal consensus. Don't expect the customer to share your interpretation or even know your interpretation if you don't tell them.

Bottom line, it's silly for employees to be whining about when customers enter the store for the simple reason that they control when the customer can enter the store. If you don't want someone coming in at 8:55pm then have the door locked at 8:55pm. It's just that simple.

As for the whines that corporate management doesn't give them adequate pay, time, resources, etc. that is an internal issue. It's not the customer's concern. If corporate gives you 15 minutes to close up and leave then you need to ask them how to handle the late customer who lingers around.

Costco and some other bigger stores make a series of increasingly urgent announcements--15 minutes to go, 10, 5, please check out now before we close the cash registers, etc.

Too bad you can't lock the doors at 5 till but laws state doors must be open until closing, so you're stuck.
Why don't you just never unlock the doors? Keep them locked all the time 24/7/365. That will keep those pesky customers out of the store. Don't know how you are going to get paid. But you won't have to deal with demanding customers wanting service.

That again is just a stupid early closing time. No normal person would expect a mall to suddenly be closing down at 5PM on a busy shopping day like Saturday. That would be pretty early even for a Sunday.

And yes, if I'm spending a lot of money on blinds, you are going to cut them for me at 4:58 on Saturday afternoon. If it bothers you that much, then please just find another type of work, that you don't hate so much.
