Hmm, speaking of fear... I think that sometimes there is a healthy fear (something that is for your good):
Fear of running in front of a gun keeps you alive. Fear of jumping into the fire, also. Fear of speaking insults to your boss prevents you from losing your job. And so on...

But sometimes something malfunctions and creates a fear that is not useful: Fear of tight spaces, fear of normal everyday germs, fear of harmless spiders... and so on... (or maybe it's not a malfunction, but a natural course that things take place under certain circumstances, but for now it doesn't make sense)
