Narcissism, the clinical version, is generally thought to be much more common in men than in women, although there's also a POV that suggests this may be due to cultural biases, and that female Narcissism may simply be 'under-reported'.

In any case, whether it's the 'clinical' kind, or just having narcissistic "tendencies", do you think narcissism is more common in either gender, and if so, why?

What's up with these gender threads? Does it really make a difference is women make up 55% or 35% of the narcissist population?

Help me understand your obsession with gender.

Narcissism, again, is a symptom of emotional damage during younger years.

As synapses are growing normally....try crying for hours neglected with a wet
diaper and hungry, only to be shouted at or slapped...the normal synapses
stop right there. No more growth to the compassion, sensitive, empathy connection points.

So, does this neglectful abuse happen to girl or boy babies more often?

Self~centeredness, self absorption, huge egos, emotional and spiritual immaturity...are not clinically diagnosable narcissism.

So only abused or neglected people become narcissistic? Seems to me that most of us are narcissistic and of course some, more so than others. But I have a hard time believing its childhood neglect or abuse that makes one a narcissist. Plenty of people have good childhoods and still turn out to be narcissist.

Narcissism is too often confused with what I said...self absorption, ego, immaturity, etc.
Narcissism is incurable...why? Because the synapses do not exist in the physical brain
to the connections a normal healthy humans brain would.
They can't be fixed like a bridge that washed out...there was never a bridge.

I exaggerated the example of parental abuse... to make it clearer...but any ignoring
in a crib...gruff words instead of soothing love...oh brother...it is very sad.
Try being that child for many years...it doesn't happen once it is repeated horrible treatment.

Remember, Rhesus monkeys die with no touch. Was it their fault?
The anger towards narcissists has got to stop...they are damaged....just as a liver can be damaged or wounded.
The brain is an organ, just like the liver.

If people would not take things so personnally, talk about self centered...compassion and wisdom would be the reward.

Desires and needs that are not met as infants and toddlers are the base cause
of every war in this world...paraphrase from Dr. Janov, "Primal Scream"...from my
readings decades ago.
There is a core pain and core need that was never fulfilled...in many.
This is then projected out towards the world....the clerk doesn't smile at you, so
you report them...why? Because you want the world now to be your mother...the
mother that never gave you what you so desparately needed..approval, love, praise, comfort.
The car that cuts you off you take personally...sigh, if only people would seek therapy.
But, they feel so justified in their anger.

The same car cuts another off...they don't care...they have perfect peace about it.
The clerk doesn't smile at someone else...it doesn't effect them in the least.
What's the difference...emotional maturity.

We are very wounded people on this planet...as a whole...not narcissists necessarily.

As the OP indicates, we're not just talking about clinical Narcissism, "Primal Screams" or "synapses"….. but also about narcissistic 'tendencies' in everyday culture, and are they more common among males or females?

There are several billion people on this planet, and some are bound to be narcissists. It has more to do with individuals then gender.
