Nobody knows who you are when you are posting on the internet so how can you say?
Often we do know other posters' genders:
1. User name (although not always reliable as previously stated). If it's "Jane" or "Ani" or ends in "mom" that's a pretty good clue, for example.
2. Personal profiles. Many (though certainly not all) posters list their gender under the public profiles which we can all look at unless they are restricted to "friends only".
3. Casual remarks over time. If we frequent a particular forum there are often regular posters whom we come to "know". Sometimes they may speak of a wife or a husband, or an ex-wife or ex-husband.
When none of the above applies, of course we don't know.
....Trolls swarm the internet because they can type things here that they can't say in public.
True, but that's why many post on-line. You often don't want to discuss politics, religion or race with your co-workers and neighbors because of potential friction.
Anything I say online I'd be willing to say in public. I might not be willing to say it in certain situations with certain people for my own safety or career/money (those are paramount), but generally I won't censor what I have to say.
And I bet if I spoke on certain topics I'd be called a troll for those extreme views. But rest assured I'd say and have said the same in public to the shagrin of many a listener.

There's a STRONGER demand for culture normalcy on many forums than there is in actual society.
I wonder how come.
Somebody should research this and write a book about it.

We know other posters' gender.....................
But not necessarily the true anything about trolls as they may create fake identities and be good at maintaining a bogus personality.
Just look at the demographics for online child predators. Do you think it's a coincidence that the overwhelming majority of online child predators are male? Yet you and others would be surprise that the majority of trolls are most likely males.
But child predators and trolls are two separate things.
I fell victim to some trolls today on another forum yet again. It just annoys me that I post a legit thread and then certain people start with personal attacks and make assumptions. What makes these keyboard warriors want to do this? Honestly I truly believe the people who start trouble online have a rap sheet in real life. There is definitly something psychologically wrong with these people to want to come on line simply looking to start trouble. And when you strike back at these trolls fellow members that like them attack you too and back them up. It's bs all around.
I read an article about it and a study has said internet trolls have traits of psychopathy, narcissism, and sadism. I totally believe that. The internet brings out sooooooo many weird people because of the anonymity.
I'm sure I'll get some trolls to comment on this too it's a given
Trolls are unhappy people who think they'll be powerful if they put someone down or negate a person's opinions. They want to stir the pot because it makes them feel in control, important. Of course, if they were REALLY important people, they would offer constructive advice and a listening ear, because they'd have nothing to gain from putting another person down.
Beware people who genuinely don't want to help you. And then, IGNORE THEM!

To me, a troll is still a little man under a bridge,or a character in a online game.
