I think the way men compete with each other is more simple and often driven by shows of force, and as such get resolved more cleanly and don't lead to complicated grudges as often. That's why two guys on a sports team can come to blows, then go laugh and have a drink later, as opposed to weird feuds women have.

And I say it goes way back on the evolutionary timeline. As an apprentice dog trainer I spend a lot of time amongst a big group of dogs; as much as trying to establish dominance is seen as "macho" behavior, the struggle for female dominance is twice as intense.

I agree with mostly everyone so far. Very often, women intensely judge other women based on physical appearance. I remember my friend once telling me he thought this actress was hot, and the girl sitting behind him starting talking to her friend and criticizing every little thing about her. Men might compete on the basis of strength, but I don't think many will actually criticize other men based on physical appearance. If anything, it would just be the basis of a joke.

Hormones -emotionally reactive and competitive with other women.

I love dealing with level headed women. I HATE dealing with hormonal, competitive women.

I am a woman.

I'm not a woman, but a lot of women aren't especially friendly to me as a male either. I've heard that women are more 'socially aggressive', and sometimes it makes me glad not to be female...

Why are women less likely to be "tough" on men? Um...one reason and one reason only, too much fraternization with the enemy.

The competition and jealousy never ends for some women, but I've seen it finally begin to lessen when they get older, like in their sixties. Widows especially seem to value their women friends more at that age.

ÓP, as a man you should be well aware of the man v man phenomenon.

Or, as we in Australia like to call it, a "p*ssing contest". Ego driven BS that even makes its way onto our tv screens.

Yet you seem befuddled when women behave the same way?

I'm kind of shocked at this thread. No screams of MISOGYNY MISOGYNY MISOGYNY! I agree with most of the things of said above and I will add that not having to deal with female drama is one of the best perks of being a gay man.

.
I've heard soccer refs say that if two guys start getting into something, the quickest way to end it is to get the ball in play and they'll go chase the ball instead. But if two women get into something, you have to watch them the whole game and again next year because they will hold the grudge over the year.
