I was just daydreaming about the oceanand how much I love the sounds and smells of being near it. I could sit next to an ocean for 8 hours and not get tired of it. I don't live near an ocean but they inhabit my daydreams often. I never go swimming or surfing. I just like to look at it or hear it.
I wonder if something in human DNA programs us to like certain things. Why would I like sitting next to an ocean for 8 hours? Why do people like furry animals but not spiders and snakes? Does it have to do with evolution?
I'm not crazy about the ocean because I grew up as a child through young adulthood near the beach in South Florida. Oh, I like looking at it, but I would rather swim in a pool.

I was taught by someone (I tend to trust) that our likes and dislikes are learned and they depend on associations. Something reminds you of something else.
For example, some people may like the bigness of an ocean, the never ending factor of it, it gives them a sense of awe about life, a sense of freedom, a sense of exploration, exhilaration. Others can equate the ocean with feeling peace. The waves methodically sweep back and forth, making a peaceful rhythm which relaxes a person.
To me personally (I am guessing here, just letting my brain tell me what I supposedly think about this) the ocean represents something that is too big for me to handle, so I don't really get involved with it too much. But because of being so big, it is also associated with mystery, with something exciting to know about. So therefore, I feel a bit...not sure what word I am looking for...inspired when I see it. I am curious about it, but from afar. I don't want to be in the middle of it. It's too scary that way.
So, anyways, it's all about associations. You associate objects with some idea and so therefore they elicit certain feelings.
I absolutely love bride dresses. And I guess it's because I am a huge romantic and I love fairy tales and the bride dresses remind me of all that (subconsciously). While consciously I just admire them because they are so beautiful.
Guys like cars. I am guessing it has something to do with aggression, control, speed, freedom, skill. I think they feel so proud when they get inside, it's like they feel like they have wings to fly now. And it's like they have more self confidence now. And freedom to go anywhere, not to be tied up to a certain place. They probably feel like batman, powerful and like they can do anything now. Or something like that.
Some girls like dresses. And it's probably associated with softness and grace and caring and love that they feel.
Some girls nowdays like pants. It's probably associated with girls feeling more in control of their life, being more independent, more bad ass... more equal to guys.
The sound of the ocean is rhythmic, like breathing, or a heartbeat. I'm sure that contributes to its wonder. Also, there are so many treasures hidden under its surface. On land, we see the same things day in, day out. We can go to new cities and towns and countries, but we'll see the same things - people, buildings, land animals. We can't just go for a stroll at the bottom of the ocean, so there's a lot of awe and mystery involved. I love the ocean, and I couldn't live away from it!
It's several things for me: first it covers 71% of the earth and much of what is underneath them is a mystery.
Also, the oceans had life millions of years before the earth's air was fit to breath. So life came out of them.
Add the sound of the waves.....it's majestic. Wish we lived near one.
I have thousands of memories of the ocean,,, I do like the salt air smell, the sound of the waves
I like fishing on the ocean-
my father is a lobster fisherman- I grew up working on his boat- and living right on the ocean
I use to eat lobster everyday, worked very hard from sun up to dark all summer long,,,with my hands in dead stinky fish bait all day long
its a mixed bag
one of my all time favorite spots is pemaquid point,,, along the coast of maine- you can drive right to a lighthouse
walk along the rocks with the crashing waves in front of you - great place for a picnic
my grandmother lived in Kennebunkport on the ocean and have some great family memories of being there
reflections in the waves, spark my memories
