When I run water in the shower, sometimes I hear voices - like a crowd of people-
talking, laughing, yelling, making "background noise", but it sounds
far-away.

They are not distinguishable. That is, I cannot tell what they are saying.
Like when you hear a bunch of people talking in the next room,
but can't tell what they are saying.

I used-to think it was ghosts or spirits coming from the running water.

I know I'm not alone, because my mom once mentioned it,
and I learned that both of us had the same problem;
(by the way she is Bi-polar)

I never talked about it with anyone else, or have heard of anyone else having
this problem.

Usually happens when there is a window near the shower.

It hasn't happened lately, and I'm assuming it's because I don't have a window
in my shower anymore.

If anyone else has this problem or has had it,
it would be cool to hear your input.

And maybe give a reasonable explanation for this phenomenon.

its probably the sounds of people in other apartments, coming thru your vents. Look above your shower, there might be one there.

if not, then at the point the sounds are coming in, there may be a very thin wall between apartments. If you remove your medicine cabinet, you might be able to see into your neighbor's apartment.

It sounds like it might be related to 'musical ear syndrome' (google it) . It doesn't sound like what you had is identical, but the part where the voices are indistinguishable sounds similar.

From what I understand, unless the voices are talking *to* you and telling you things, it shouldn't be an area of concern.

You are not the only one. And it is normal.

I think it is a lot of this: Pareidolia

And this: McGurk Effect

And this: Ganzfeld Effect

There were no vents.
Only 1 old black man living downstairs.

And the people living on both sides of me were both single.
It was a 2 floor apartment. oh, forgot to mention, it was when I
lived in California. These are not Chicago apartments.

I know sometimes it could be the neighbor's television.
But I know the difference between a tv, and different echo-ey voices
talking all at the same time.

(about the medicine cabinet, yeah, where I live NOW I had to seal the cracks because the
neighbors were pervs and snooping on me and my girlfriend)

uh.... my hearing is CRYSTAL Clear.
Although I might have had the Charles Bonnet syndrome, dealing with hallucinations
caused by bad eyesight, and seeing what is not there.

The McGurk Effect and the Ganzfeld Effect, I can admit to having, when I was using
illegal sedatives.

But neither of the 3 you mentioned describe or fully explain why water sounded like
crowds of echoing voices.

I only experience this after vaping too much MMJ. Maybe one of your neighbors in Cali was smoking it up and you were highly susceptible to the fumes?

This has happened to me. I am not bipolar, but I am clairaudient (I do not actually think that makes any difference, though).

For me, it happened most often when I would take a shower in a bathroom in a house I owned some years ago. I remember telling my counselor at the time, that if I were the type of person who thought these were spirits telling me things, it could be a problem! It often sounded like one or two voices that were saying something that I might be able to understand if I could only hear them a little bit more clearly. There was a window in that bathroom. When we remodeled the bathroom (and changed from a working window to glass blocks) it ceased in that house.

But it's funny, just yesterday I was doing something in my kitchen (different home in a different area) and I remember thinking "Wow, that sounds like a voice is trying to tell me something." It sounded like an actual person, again, just short of being clear speech. I wish I could remember what I was doing. I think I might have been pouring some sugar water into a plastic container. I know that, as with the shower, it had to do with moving liquid.

I don't know of any scientific explanation for this, but I figure that with all of the sounds around us, some of them are naturally going to fall into the pitch and cadence of human speech, and since the human brain is programmed to make sense of what is going on around it, we will try to make those sounds into something that makes sense.

This is a natural function of sound and hearing. It is not spirits trying to communicate with us, or anything else supernatural. As a shamanic practitioner and a medium, I know the difference.

Looking at the first 2 paragraphs might be a big clue.

Sounds of running water can sound similar to people talking but not distinctively with recognizable words. I've experienced that when getting close to Brooks and water falls when out hiking in the woods. I find sounds of the ocean have a similar effect

Close your eyes and listen carefully to the sound the ocean for a minute. Reminds me of a crowd in the distance.

It's a 3 hour video. But just the first minute or so should be enough to get the idea. Oddly the sounds of water are some of the few sounds I can still hear.
