I think any obssessive compulsive disorder can develop into stalking.

I don't know about official deceases, but like some people have tendencies to be addicted to drugs or alcohol, others have addictions to people.

And that's who stalker is. A person who is addicted to another person. AND who is missing the necessary ingredient which counteracts the addiction.

Stalkers are very often suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. They fixate on the people they fall in love with and want to follow them everywhere and be with them every minute. They cannot imagine (in some cases) that you would not feel the same way. God help you if you reject them; then they are likely to turn to violence, against themselves or against you or both. And don't forget the rabbit-boiling scene in FATAL ATTRACTION. There can be all kinds of collateral damage.

Other options: You might be stalked by someone with a psychotic disorder if he or she has attached delusional ideas to you -- that you are the one reporting all his thoughts to the White House or the Vatican, for instance, and need to be stopped. Or s/he might be trying to prove that you really are a robot who's replaced your Home Ec teacher.

Delusional disorder means you don't have a full-blown psychosis, but you have one totally wrong idea that you will not let go of. A common one is "he or she is cheating on me" and that can easily lead to stalking the partner, the person who is supposedly having an affair with the partner or even someone who appears to be aiding or abetting the non-existent liaison.

An autistic person with poor social skills and a knack for single-mindedness might stalk you, not understanding that this is not how you get someone to like you.

There are probably a lot of other variations I can't think of right this second.

I think the main one is Antisocial PD.

They stalk people to get information on them they will later use against them, or use as a way to manipulate them.

They also stalk once relationships end if they have trouble letting go of the dominance bond. AsPDs have trouble accepting their victim has "won," or has gotten away from them. They want to own and dominate their victims as long as they want to. They want to be the ones to say when it ends and if the person ends it before they are ready, they could stalk them out of revenge or as a way to continue to control them.

I think Borderline PDs can stalk too because they also have trouble letting go. For them its more out of wanting a connection with the person, wanting to know if they have someone new, hoping for a reconciliation most likely and wanting to know the chances of reconciling.

I believe these are the main two types that stalk and the reasons. Others can too, but I think its less common.

This type of personality disorder does not have to a nutcase..Many folks may be power/control freaks..and what motivates them stems from the basic Obsessive/Compulsion disorder on STEROIDS!!

Having said all that...Only truly Power/Control types would elevate it to murder or other nasty responses when their needs aren't satisfied....The notion of retribution or payback is seeded in their narcissistic minds!! Me Me Me..or for some following stars..basking in the light of their target..stems from yet another mindset..usually need to be recognized and loved without filters of commonness!!

When folks have known NO BOUNDARIES..then they grow up seeking total control..and vindications occurs when they are denied...or rebuffed!! Sh$t often happens!!

How about "lonely people, who are hoping to have an opportunity to make a favorable impression on someone, and aren't very good at it."

How has the definition of Sociopath expanded so broadly as to include everyone who simply isn't very skilled at interpersonal relationships?

According to the Department of Justice; average time frame stalkers fixate on their victim, 2 1/2 yrs.

Pathology? Well, of course, pick one. Psychotic? Not always. Speaking as a victim; as a smooth and well spoken as Ted Bundy, you wouldn't guess. And for added fun; not beneath finding some low life slob to add to their payroll whose willing to give a 4pg deposition to prosecutors after they're discovered.
