I've been reading an article online and it says that insomnia might have many different causes, like

depression, anxiety, chronic stress, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder.
antidepressants; cold and flu medications that contain alcohol; pain relievers that contain caffeineasthma, allergies, Parkinson’s disease, hyperthyroidism, acid reflux, kidney disease, cancer, chronic pain. etc.

Long story short, this person does not have any of the above.

He cannot sleep because he has violent dreams e.g. been killed or been chased after.

He can only sleep two - four hours a night.

What else can cause insomnia? Can It be psychological?

It can be psychological. You say this person has none of those causes, but anxiety/stress can cause terrible nightmares and insomnia. Anxiety is psychological. It's not easy to know if someone suffers from anxiety.

btw, I taught my son how to change his nightmares when he told me that he had frightening ones. I told he that he can manipulate his nightmares by changing what happens---instead of running, stand and fight, etc.. (He didn't have insomnia, he was just sharing a scary nightmare.) The next morning when he awoke, he excitedly announced, "It worked!"

You didn't say how old this person is. If it's a child, add victim of abuse/molestation to the list of possible causes.

It sounds like some form of depression. Go see a psychologist.

She is talking about me. I have seen a psychologist before, I have no issues, a touch of narcissism but I see a counselor for that once a month. No other problems from that. My nightmares stem from seeing and experiencing others lives through their eyes. It runs in my family. Call it ghosts, spirits, talking to dead people, whatever, thats what my nightmares come from.

Its not anything that can be helped with medication unless I just want to konk out with no dreams whatsoever. I do that sometimes, some days I sleep fine with no medication. However, usually 4 days a week I wake up in a very bad way. Sometimes I experience someones death, sometimes I experience being the cause of it. I am seeing it through someone elses eyes, not my own.

I have couple of friends are dealing with the same thing. But they are combat Marines, so PTSD is the cause of their sleeping disorder.

Do you take Ambien? If you believe in reincarnation, may I suggest "past life regression therapy?"

I have taken Ambien, and its one of the things that knocks me out cold. As I have young children at home most nights, I don't take them because, well, if my daughter gets up and wants daddy, daddy won't hear her on Ambien.

past life regression could be part of it, but it never feels like its me. Some are very modern in nature, while I'm still alive now though.

You might try marijuana. It suppresses dreams. If you stop smoking it, you'll be flooded with vivid dreams.

Marijuana helps. Yes it does. But, unfortunately, it is illegal and hard to come by on a daily basis in my state. So I buy some out of state but it only lasts so long. When tennessee legalizes for medical use, one day, I'll be at the front of the line.
