What does it mean when someone is described as being an 'old soul'?

It is viewed positively, negatively or neutral?

the idea of an "old soul" comes from the new age movement. many of these people believe in a form of reincarnation, or soul recycling. the thought behind it is, and there was even a movie made depicting this, that you are recycled on earth until you reach a certain level of fear reduction, or what ever, before you move on to become a citizen of the universe.

I think it is either positive or neutral.

I've been told that if a person is very sensitive, kind, compassionate, intuitive, spiritual in general, there is a big chance that that person could be an old soul.

The old soul is non-judgmental and kind, those who have learned many lessons from past incarnations and they are able to progress faster than regular people.

There is one book I would recommend

Same Soul, Many Bodies: Discover the Healing Power of Future Lives through Progression Therapy
by Brian L. Weiss

I've always taken it to mean someone who is wiser and more mature than their physical age.

Do you remember what film that was? I'd be interested in watching it.

Was it a 70s movie called The Reincarnation of Peter Proud? Really freaked me out seeing it, but it's rarely around these days.

This. When very wise words come out of the mouths of children, it is often said they are an old soul.

Whenever I describe someone as an old soul whether they are a child, someone my age or older it's usually a feeling I get that this person "gets it."

They see through the B.S., are wise, and have this something about them that you can't explain but they seem to be grounded inside, have a perceptive that's rather humble/compassionate. They seem to also have this way about them where they don't take life too too seriously, but they can take it seriously enough to where they can decipher between what's ethical and what's not (and act upon it). They are conscientious and kind.
