This may be a far-fetched question, but don't think it will be very consolatory for depressed individuals to be put under an induced coma as they can be put out of their misery for a while? You can call it a "temporary euthanasia". Not to mention, when I'm extremely depressed, all I want is to "shut down", and only when I'm asleep I feel better.
I'm guessing the procedure will be expensive and unorthodox, but I say why not give it a try (if there is euthanasia, why not this?.
So possible. The question is if your insurance would pay for it. If not, then if you have enough money to pay for it. Then would any medical professional do this for you?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors. Might want to find one and discuss this as well as other options.
Have you tried all other options before you come to this dramatic concept?
Like what? They say vitamin D works for depression (they can soften the intensity). Antidepressants are usually the first option, although you'd have to wait 6-8 weeks for them to take effect - Some deeply depressed individuals who can be suicidal (a la, Robin Williams) can't wait for that long.
Life is precious. And this "dramatic concept" should be cerebrated, especially when you're having suicidal people in mind.

Like What? i have no idea but if you are depressed to the point you want to be put in a coma isnt the medical profession the people to talk to to get to the heart of the matter.?Or if you have talked to them what did they say?
IMO pack a backpack and go for a 1-2 year walk about in the outback.

I know that this is an old thread, but what I meant was that instead of euthanizing depressed individuals (a European country has done this), they can just put them in a coma for a few months, until they recover. Yes, recover - Depression is all but in the brain. Whilst asleep, they can be "medicated" with antidepressants, until the brain gets filled with feel-good hormones.

Then they'd have to spend a few months recovering from the effects of the coma. Like atrophied muscles. You don't just leap out of bed felling great after months in a coma.
yeah, and then they go home, their apartment is gone, the job is gone and all their stuff and then they have the next depression.
This doesn't make sense. Ah, and they probably have to fight withdrawals from the meds they got while in the coma, besides the muscles being all shrunken.
You don't feel anything while you are asleep. So, there is never any awareness of "feeling better."
