I notice that this idea exists that humans are very logical and rational. I find people to be reasonably logical when it comes to certain things such as basic mathematics or rudimentary pattern recognition. However, it seems as when ever a subject comes up in which someone already has an opinion regarding it, all logic and rationality flies out the window for the sake of holding on to that opinion. Can anyone explain why this happens? Has anyone else noticed this?

I call it "High school gang - follow the leader". Or "blind sheep". These are people who follow others and can't do their own thinking.

And in these gangs/groups, if one person deviates from what the others in the group are doing, they will be shunned and chastised by others in the group.

Intelligent people could care less what others think - make up their own minds.

I think there was a whole book written on this subject. It turns out that humans are irrational, but our irrational thinking and behavior follow predictable patterns:
