It sounds like a fairly easy job to you right now but there will be guys who don't want just sex - they will talk down to you, offend you, maybe even hurt you, hit you, choke, ..... there are lots of freaks out there, not just harmless horny dudes wanting to get off.
I'm doing it through dating sites at the moment. Guys message me for "fun" well I tell them I'll do it if they pay me. I'm not planning on standing on street corners just yet. I may be meeting one guy on Saturday. I don't know why I didn't think of it before instead of delete the messages. Also, as a transsexual person, you may well be at an even higher risk than a cis person for being the victim of violence/a hate crime in this particular line of work.
I would try to get another job additional to the sexual job if possible, even if it is very low waged.
So you don't have to rely on it completely and it gives you the luxury of being able to choose the guys. Once you get desperate and get in the car with guys who look shady and you ignore your gut feeling because the money is too tempting, sh$t happens.
I don't know that from experience nor have I ever been in that business but I watched a lot of documentaries. Not sure if that counts.

OP says they have mental health issues and possible homelessness. Both of these are MAJOR hurdles in leading the sort of Regular Life you recommend.
Some of us (me) could get 100 jobs, tomorrow - but be utterly unable to keep any of them. Its like expecting a cancer patient to pull themselves together, without treatment or support, and get back to the grindstone.
I am not against prostitution. I am for it. I believe it is not something that is wrong. Sexual needs and impulses are not wrong. It is a vice that should be regulated and taxed like any other.
With that said your desperation is a guiding factor. Never a good choice. Doesn't mean it wont turn out well for you. Many a woman in her times of desperation ended up in a strip club, porn industry, or hooking in your situation. Some of them it liberates them and will give you an avenue towards success and even financial security. Eventually moving on to a different and even stable life.
With that said though... A lot more have been gobbled up and ended up worse. The illegal nature of the business is what leads to most the terror. It's cliche. It is true though.
Anyway here's the thing I do not know UK hooker laws. A lot of Europe is legal or semi legal where you can be safe. Belgium and Netherlands comes to mind. Maybe you need to do a couple of good jobs and get out of dodge to where it's regulated or a major city in the UK.
