A percentage of prostitutes do it because they are forced by criminal organizations, pimps, etc. Others need to support a drug habit, or are facing extreme circunstances and need to prostitute themselves in order to raise a baby, or pay a medical bill, etc.

But there's a small percentage who do it because they dont want to have a conventional job.

Imagine a person from a first world country. In some place where prostitution is legal, like Holland, or the State of Nevada.

That person had the same upbringing than anyone else. Good schooling, good grades, supportive family, lots of oportunities...but he or she becomes and adult and must make a living on his/her own.

So she hates the prostitution world, and hates her clients and hates to sell her body to strangers...but she still does it because she hates even more having a conventional job with a worse payment/work hours ratio than prostitution.

Nobody forces that person, it's a 100 percent personal choice.

So I guess it's a case of extreme laziness.

Any other explanation?

I've always wondered about the psychology of prostitution. I'm sure many of the clients are very unattractive, so it makes me wonder, how can a woman live with herself after sleeping with many unattractive men? Wouldn't that be a form of trauma in a way? Or does her brain form some type of defense mechanism that enables her to cope with it?

As to your question, I don't think it's a case of extreme laziness, unless it's a low-income person who lives in a dangerous/violent neighborhood and who has never had a work ethic. I think for others it's just a choice, especially those who feel they can earn more money in a typical week through prostitution as opposed to a regular job. I once saw a tv show that showed an American woman living in Amsterdam who worked as a prostitute there. And she had an MBA, but she nonetheless chose to work as a prostitute abroad.

"Lazy" is not the word you are looking for. It is work, and it's not work for the faint of heart.

I would think sex work would actually require a lot of effort and energy.

I think it's perfect for a lazy person. She'd get to spend a lot of her time on her back in a bed.

Low morals, insecurities, unhappy upbringing, plus minimum effort may turn somebody into a prostitute

There are many people who do not have a conscience. I don't know for sure but my take is they just like sex more than most (maybe on the side of addiction) and the thrill of getting paid for it.
So I agree with you on the "choice."

I think many men who see prostitutes have an issue / guilt with masturbation. I can't relate to paying an outrageous fee just for meaningless sex when I can do it myself for free.

But other men should be free to make that choice.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that many sex workers actually get any fulfillment out of their encounters on a regular basis. The johns are paying for their own satisfaction, not so much the escort's.

They both could be addicted so you are onto something, in some cases. I've never been to one but I am well read and it's my understanding it is very expensive to see a prostitute, legal or otherwise.
