I used to go on two camping trips each year, camping in SUV or tent. I always got a full night of good sleep when camping. Best night ever was when I pulled off the highway and drove 1/2 mile inside forest (near Grand Canyon north rim, camping alone, slept in my SUV) and just after cooking dinner on my camp stove the biggest thunderstorm I ever saw started and raged throughout the night. I love lightning and thunder and fell asleep during 2-3 thunder and lightning strikes per minute. Woke up fully rested and next morning not a cloud in the sky! It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!

I am a very avid and prolific dreamer. To the point that I am even teaching myself how to influence my ream content.

After a most recent and horrible year, due to spousal infidelity and lying, my emotional state was all messed up. As well as my physical health being affected. And then, having my sleep disrupted.

I have basically being re-visiting my bio-feedback lessons I learned 20 years ago. Telling myself, before attempting to find sleep...to dream GOOD dreams. If I start a nightmare or a weird dream, I do try to recognize it and wake myself up. We need our sleep.

When I was a child I used to have nightmares. One day, I simply told myself I liked nightmares (having realized they were not real) and since then I have never had any - and that actually makes me a bit sad .. some were really creative and interesting.

The only time I nowadays even remember dreaming is when I was stressed about something - and while I would not call any ensuing bad night that follows too much worrying about something as exactly being filled with 'nightmares', it is very obvious when stress shows up in getting less than peaceful deep sleep. It certainly can result in fitful sleep and that is very tiring .. which may lead to more stress the next day, etc. A self-fulfilling prophecy for some people I think.

If you are the kind of person who stresses out a lot or is generally anxious, then the only things I can really suggest are a) deal with the subject/object that is causing your stress head on before bedtime and/or b) learn to do a lot of 'de-stressing' on a regular basis and especially before bed - meditation, yoga, etc. might help you.

No, YOU cannot control your dreams. Others can, particularly if they take measures to influence their state of mind.

I'm almost always aware my dream is just a dream. I've never seen any need to try to control my dreams. My dreams occur mostly just before waking and I remember them vaguely although I don't try to hold on to the memories. I'm too lazy to try to analyze my dreams. They are mostly pleasant or sometimes odd, never nightmares. (My XGF called them "night horses.") Funny, her name was "Mare" AKA Marilyn.

Of course I can't say I remember the dreams I forgot. If I had them evidently they had no effect on me.

Maybe some day I'll try to control or analyze my dreams. However I'm a confirmed procrastinator!
