It seems that laughing is a social thing that we do when around other people. But Schopenhauer notes that animals, which have no imagination, never laugh. Did you ever see an animal laugh? He(Schopenhauer) believed that people with a gift of imagination would laugh when alone. He didn't state pacifically what would be laughed at but I think you get my point. I do laugh occasionally when I am by myself when I think of something that strikes me as humorous.
But I disagree about animals having no imagination. I have had many cats (1 or 2 at a time), and they love to pretend--that's imagination. You know they don't actually want a piece of string, right? They're pretending it's the tail of some tiny creature.
And most animals physically can't laugh, but my cats sometimes play tricks on me, and get a very smug expression that would be a laugh if they were people.
Yeah, go ahead, dismiss me as a crazy cat lady. That'll make me laugh!
I often laugh when I'm alone, because I crack myself up sometimes. According to my husband, I also laugh a lot in my sleep. As far as animals laughing - I'm not sure if they do or not, but this dog seems to be really enjoying listening to the music:
