It seems that laughing is a social thing that we do when around other people. But Schopenhauer notes that animals, which have no imagination, never laugh. Did you ever see an animal laugh? He(Schopenhauer) believed that people with a gift of imagination would laugh when alone. He didn't state pacifically what would be laughed at but I think you get my point. I do laugh occasionally when I am by myself when I think of something that strikes me as humorous.
I would imagine that most people laugh when alone since it is more about what is funny rather than who is around. Being with others who are laughing may make us laugh harder because people tend to mimic the emotions of those around them, to a certain extent. I'm not sure animals have the ability to laugh, but my dog does smile, or at least seems like he does. I noticed he only smiles when he is around family and when he is getting special attention. Even if it's not a true smile, it's cool to see his expression when he is happy!
I laugh all the time when I'm alone. It's usually when I'm watching TV or reading something that strikes me funny, but sometimes I'll think of something from my past that just tickles me and I'll start laughing.
Loudly and maniacally. It keeps the neighbors in line.
