Things that are difficult to change like appearance, race, gender, or non physical attributes like family, wealth, country etc..

I see so many people respond to anyone who's discontent with themselves and trying to change it "Love yourself for who you are".

this thread isn't about whether people should heed that or not but rather if it even makes a difference. It seems to me that almost everyone in life accepts so many attributes that are undesirable and even changeable 'just like that'. When I used to hear this statement, I was under the false belief that a significant amount of people even if in the minority, were getting plastic sugrery, lightening their skin if a minority, leaving their dysfuntional families. I've heard time and time again people expressing grieveances over these things but involuntarily accepting them.

Why is this? Where are all the people who refuse to accept suffering from something they probably can't change? Surely not everyone abides by the virtue "It's better to accept what you can't control". Have you met anyone like this?

I am one of those people who refuse to accept the cards they've been dealt in life. I'm sorry, but I believe in turning things upside down and exploring possibilities. Believe it or not, most of the things deemed beyond our control (such as the glorious examples you gave) are very much open to change. The problem that keeps some people seizing control and doing as they please is mostly cultural and societal pressures to not "sellout or betray your kind" and "keep you in your place". The smaller but no less significant part of the issue is mankind's stubborness to change. There's not much controversy behind a person who assaults a transgender or demonizes a woman for acquiring a lot of wealth by devoting themselves to their careers when you understand the root of such hostility. Change. It terrifies us, because it's shrouded in the unknown. Some want to stay stuck in their ways (guilty as charged) while the brave embrace change and grow from it.

As for the whole love yourself mantra, I appreciate the sentiment behind it, but if loving myself was as simple as they make it out to be than I'd be cured of my depression. Unfortunately, love is not enough to keep the symptoms at bay.

There is actually quite a bit you have the power to change.
