I spent 5 years traveling the Pacific Crest Trail on horseback in summers, then living with strangers we met in the winter. That is outta the box for most people!
So glad I did it WHEN I could and was young enough to handle it. Age 38 to 45.
Probably studying languages, purely for pleasure, as an American. I speak Japanese and Arabic pretty well, I'm learning German now, and I've dabbled in dozens of others from the mundane (French, Mandarin, Polish) to the obscure (Navajo, Albanian, Zulu).
I once consumed LSD at the bottom of the grand canyon. After I hiked back out a few days later, I returned home , immediately quit my cush government job with full benefits and sold my perfectly good and completely paid for new construction house. Bought a camp trailer, traveled around America and Canada multiple times for a few years to pretty much everywhere cool and worth going to. Bought land out in the middle of nowhere, completely off the grid in Alaska, built my own geodesic domes from completely from scratch by myself and now live in them. True story.
Moral of the story: Don't take acid at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
Taking off in my 1971 Travco and vagabonding through the south, midwest, mountain states for 2 years. I was practically homeless with no job and only 5k saved when I first set out on the road. Looking back, it almost seems surreal but I'd do it again. No regrets.
I was at home and decided to catch a plane to Europe I stayed in Budapest a month, and went to Vienna a few times, went through Slovakia etc etc.
I decided not to become a 9-5 person and start my own jewellery studio which I did for about five, six years.
I also sold my paintings.I had my poems published in the university papers.
I'm glad if in 100 years some descendants look me up,it will say artist/poet/art jeweller, etc etc and not worked in a bank.
I took a lot of Inspiration from bohemians like Beatrice wood on how to live my life outside the box.
