I don't stay quiet about it, or ignore it but I don't get confrontational about it either. Coming off as defensive or as a victim just perpetuates this sort of thing.
Typically I just say something along the lines of "Why does my reputation always get to have more fun than I do?".
If it's an absolutely ludicrous rumor I might even intercept its potential for damage by bringing it up myself, such as "You mean you haven't heard the latest? Well; I don't want to spoil all the fun for What's-Her-Butt, she's probably been dying to talk to you".
My opinion on rumors is if it's positive, I might repeat it, if it's negative, I won't.
Patty seems to be showing signs of being pregnant, might be something I'd repeat. But Patty was throwing up every morning and now she isn't, would be something I'd keep to myself.
I've worked in a few offices, and I made it a point to mind my own business, unless it was positive/happy news.
Depends on what Patty wants. Maybe the first scenario was a disaster, and the second a relief.
