I don't know if it's condescending exactly, but why does your coworker feel that it's okay to be commenting on your body? That seems rather rude and inappropriate to me. It's a little too familiar. It would make me uncomfortable.
It is definitely rude and inappropriate. Of course the OP would never comment on a man's ever-expanding beer gut (or any other aspect of his personal appearance), so why is he making personal comments about her appearance? My guess (based on 30+ years experience in a male-dominated field) is that he is probably one of those Neanderthal males who uses verbal barbs to put women 'in their place'.
I'm not him, but I think I get the message. He meant there was nothing about you that carried from when you were overweight to the weight you are at now.
I'm confused by the phrasing. 'There was nothing of you before' indicates to me that he never saw her as overweight. The OP makes it sound as though that was a terribly inaccurate observation, in which case...maybe it is condescending for its lack of honesty. Without knowing the guy's personality, it's difficult to make a determination based on the information given
I lost a lot of weight through illness and am now only 101 pounds at 5'3 tall.
A co worker said he noticed I had lost tons of weight and then said "There was nothing of you before, you're a tiny little thing. "
Would you see this as condescending?
No, more of a compliment, or simply a coworker making a simple statement. At my work, we have conversations like this all the time with only good intentions, and they are always taken exactly that way.
I don't know that your colleague was condescending, but he was awkward. It sounds like your coworker has probably also used the phrase, "tall drink of water."
This happened to me just a couple of weeks ago. A random guy passed me in a grocery store and used that phrase. At first I thought he was insulting me because of my height. (I am tall, and comfortable with it.) Later I mentioned this to a friend who said it was not an insult.
I think it is rude to make comments about bodies, faces, height, weight etc.
